Brooklyn Basin
Placemaking & Environment
A modern visual system inspired by industrial remnants
Brooklyn Basin is a former industrial waterfront in Oakland reimagined as a mixed-use neighborhood of parks, trails, and marinas. The identity draws from the site’s industrial past and the architectural remnants of the old terminal building, translating those references into a contemporary graphic language.
Hand-painted “X” markers and numbered dock identifiers create a cohesive visual layer across the waterfront, while interpretive panels share the history of the port and the voyage of the Brooklyn ship. Archival photography sourced from the Oakland Public Library grounds the experience in place, connecting the site’s layered history to its new public life.
